The Ignorance of Love
by Chelsey
I walked in Cliff’s Bistro; there I saw him, short wavy hair, brown slanted eyes, and gorgeous dark, smooth russet skin. My friend Adina always encourages me to say something to him even if it’s just “hey your shoe is untied.”
But I can’t something always stops me, Adina just doesn’t understand.

“Leah we come in here every Thursday you always say that you’re too scared or no not today. It’s time to crawl out of that stinky, old dusty turtle shell of yours and get your mouth a cracking”

“Uuhh-hhhh I just can’t do it I wish I could, I know one of these days I am going to say something.”

“Sure Leah, sure,” is all she can say.

I go to work the next day, tired worn out from thinking about that waiter. Mark my assistant walks by and stops to tap me on my shoulder to awake me.

“What’s wrong Leah, hard night?”

“Yes a very hard night I can’t even focus right now. “

“Well as beautiful as you are I can’t have you looking that way, would you like me to fix you some coffee?”

“No thanks,” I say.

Sometimes I get the feeling that Mark likes me. But he’s not too bad looking; brown-tan colored skin, a gorgeous bald head, tall and built. I don’t mind talking to Mark because for some reason I feel comfortable around him, so comfortable I could dig up and all around in my nose if I wanted to. But I don’t believe I would be his type, I think that he thinks that I’m too stuck up or something. Hey I wouldn’t blame him. I have my times when I can be a little stuck up, like when I first get my paycheck and buy me the new Mark Jacobs suit they come out with every month or when I got promoted as the underwriter of the company.
I look at the clock.
” Up, time for me to go to break,”

I hurry out the door and then I’m stopped by Mark.

“Hey Leah can I treat you to lunch?”

“Sure,” I say, “why not. “

As we walk the street he says he knows this great place that has the best pasta and bread ever. So I didn’t even think that it would be Cliff’s Bistro and when I looked to my right here we were standing right at my soon to be man’s job. I hoped that he wouldn’t be here today but as soon as Mark and I walked in the restaurant there he was to greet us right in the waiting area. I was so mad because I didn’t want him to think that Mark was my boyfriend. We followed my man to our table I smelt his cologne it smelled so good I just wanted to rub my nose all over his body. Mark and I sit down I see that my man is looking at us both; I guess he’s trying to figure out whether or not me and Mark are dating. So just to throw it out that we’re not I say:

“Thank you sir and by the way your cologne smells great.”

Mark got up and excused his self to the bathroom.

I couldn’t believe myself I had finally talked to him after three weeks of me coming to Cliff’s Bistro, I was so excited. Mark came back so fast, I didn’t even get to take off the hard grin I had on my face. I was smiling the whole time at lunch; I didn’t want Mark to think that I was smiling at him. So to quickly ruin his thinking of that I ramble about my man.

“Oh gosh, Mark do you know how long I’ve been waiting to speak to him?” I can’t wait to get home and tell my best friend Adina.” I told Mark.

He just sat there and looked blank. We got ready to leave and as we leave I see my man again, I give him a smile and a little wink.
Mark and I walked back to work it was silent almost the whole time until I gave little giggle.

“What so funny Leah, still thinking about that waiter?”

“No.”

“Then what is it? Please tell me so I can laugh.”

“It’s just that you tripped up and you acted like nothing happened”.

He looked at me like I was crazy.

“That was like, what five minutes ago?”

“I know I’m sorry but I think about things after they happen and I laugh at stupid things at times, sorry Mark if I hurt your feelings. “

“Oh no don’t be sorry you’ve got nothing to be sorry about unless you come to work one day and I don’t get see you smile at all.”

I give a little smile and turned my head and do an eye roll.

I think to myself, “Did he get that line off the internet?”

We got back at work and as soon as I walked in my office I see this big bouquet of white roses on my desk. I saw a card and it read:

“The thought of you makes me smile everyday and my feelings for you will soon be revealed.”

My face lit up. Mark looked surprised.

“I wonder who those are from,” he said.

“I don’t know but I wish they would have left their name on the card.”

I didn’t know what to do other than to call my girl Adina. I call her up but I get the answering machine.

“Hey this Adina you haven’t reached me so if you could please leave your name and number then maybe I’ll get back to you.”

I leave a message.

“Adina! Girl I got some shit to tell you I’ll just stop by when I get off work. “

I get to Adina’s place and there she is waiting on her balcony to hear the news that I have for her. Adina is very nosey at times. I walk up the steps of her apartment and I didn’t even get a chance to ring the doorbell before she flung open the door. I walk in and take a seat.

“So what’s the shit?” she says.

“Well Mark offered me to take me out to lunch and guess where he takes me.”
“Mac Donald’s?”

“Gross,” no I say. “He takes me to Cliff’s Bistro.”

“No”, she said ghastly.

“Yes I was so upset because I didn’t want my soon to be man to think that Mark was my man.” So when he sat us at our table I just said to him thank you sir, and by the way your cologne smells great.”

“You did that shit Leah?” Adina said shockingly.

“Yeah, I spoke to him and next Thursday I’m going to ask him his name and maybe even more!”

“Good, I’m happy you finally said something Leah.”

“Oh and Dina I have something else to tell you too.”

“What?”

“When Mark and I got back to the office there were white roses on my desk and a card that said:”
“The thought of you everyday makes me smile and my feelings for you will soon be revealed.”

“Mmmm, who could that be?” Adina said curiously.
“Could it be Mark, Leah?”

“You know I really don’t know, but I don’t think Mark would have feelings for me, because I think he thinks I’m too stuck up or something.

“Yeah, you can be a bitch sometimes, I think it’s him.”

I go to work the next day, I see Mark waiting at my office door.

“Good morning Leah,” Mark says.

Mornin’, I say.

“So did you ever find out about those flowers?” He looked anxious as he asked.

“No, but I am still thinking who it could be,” I say as I’m walking into my office.

“So, um Leah would you like to go rock climbing sometime?” He scratches his head in confusion.

I think to myself, “Does this fool really think I look like the type to rock climb?”
“Sure, why not,” I say.

He walks out smiling. I’m really starting to think that Mark sent me those flowers, but then I don’t think so.
As I do my paper work I can’t stop thinking about my man. I go into a blank stare. I fantasize about us having sex on the beach in the middle of night, he runs his tongue from between my thumb toe all the way up to my vagina and starts licking and pushing my click with his tongue. I moan loudly and… Mark walks in and snaps his fingers in front of my eyes.
I think to myself “Damn, this nigga ain’t got nothing better to do other than ruin people’s fantasies.”

“Would you like me too finish this work for you and you have the rest of the day off?” he says.

“No, Mark I’m fine thanks though.”

Mark leaves my office. I close and lock my door so I wouldn’t have anymore interruptions. I call Dina.

“Hello?”

“Hey Dina, we still on for Cliff’s tonight?”

“Hell yeah, girl!”

“Alright see you at 7:00.”

“Cool, bye.” She hangs up.

I pack my things in my brief case and head out my office. I head over to Dina’s she’s already waiting outside for me. We go to Cliff’s. When we walk in I see him standing at the podium. As he greets us and takes us to our table he asks:
“You ladies having a good night?”

We both answer yes and I add:

“Now that we’re here.”

He smiles and asks if he could take our order. We both order our food and as he walks away we both start giggling.

“Leah, girl if you don’t get on his dick I will, as fine as he is.”

“I know you will Dina.”

He comes back.

“So may I ask your name?” I say.

“Of course you can beautiful.” He says.
“My names Clynelle Downs but people call me Cly and yours?”

“Leah Steet,” I give him a smile.

We finish our food and I leave a 20 dollar tip along with my name and number. As we leave I see him walking over to our table and he picks up the tip and smiles.
I drop off Adina. I head home and hope and wait for Clynelle to call. I finally get tired and go to bed. I wake up the next morning and check my caller i.d. and I didn’t notice any new numbers. As I get ready for work I think about him not calling me I get angry. I head into my office and take a seat at my desk. I hear a knock at my door.

“Come in.”
“Oh hey Mark, what’s up?” I say vigorously trying to forget about Clynelle.

“Hey Leah, I just wanted to make sure everything was alright and if you were. Are you ok?”

“Well…”

“Go ahead you can talk to me about anything, I want you to be able to feel comfortable around me.”

I smile.

“You remember the restaurant we went to the other day?”

“Yeah, and the waiter, right?” Mark sigh’s and nods his head.

“Yeah, well Adina and I ate there last night and I asked him his name. Then when we finished eating I left him a 20 dollar tip, my name and number and he never called me.”

“Well, Leah a guy isn’t going to call a girl the first day he gets her number. So just relax and expect a call tonight.”

“Thanks Mark, you really made feel better.”

“Good that’s what I want to be able to do.”

He turns around, closes my door and leaves. I stop thinking about Clynelle and think about Adina, thinking about her with Mark. I go home check my machine and I hear a message from Clynelle.

“Hey this Clynelle, thanks for your number, I see you’re not home right now so when you get home you can call me anytime.”

I get excited and take a few minutes to call him so it didn’t seem like I just walked in my house. I dial the first three numbers then hang up, I get scared. I pick up the phone again and just start dialing his number.

“Hello?”

I heard a strong manly voice say.

“Um… Hi, is this Clynelle?” I say tensely.

“Yes, is this Leah?” Sounding like he was smiling.

“Yes, it is so how are you?”

“I’m fine now that I’m talking to you, and you?”

“I feel the same way.”

“I’ve seen you come in the restaurant a few times, I’ve been wanting to speak to but I was so nervous.”

I start to smile really hard and start to lightly hop up and down.

“Oh yeah? I’ve been the same, my friend kept urging me to talk to you but for some reason something was holding me back.”

“Wow, what a ka- wink-ka-dink, you know I wanted to speak to you the other day but then I saw you with that guy so I thought that was your boyfriend.”

I pause and freeze and think: “What in the hell this nigga just say? Ka-wink-ka-dink?” I forget about that damn thing and continue with the conversation.

“Oh no see that’s why I tried to do a little light flirt so that would let you know that wasn’t my boyfriend.”

“Was that when you told me that my cologne smelled good and you winked at me?”

“Yes it was.”

“So who was that guy if you mind me asking?”

“That was just my assistant, Mark.”

We talk a little while longer and he asks me if I would like to go to the park and have a picnic tomorrow since I’m off. I call Adina to tell her all the details, Mark beeps in.

“Hey Mark.”

“Hey Leah, I was just wondering if you wanted to go rock climbing.”

“I would but Clynelle asked me to the park tomorrow for a picnic, sorry.”

“That’s alright maybe the weekend I guess.”

“Yes, the weekend.”

By the time that conversation ended Adina had hung up. I call back and tell her that Mark wants to go rock climbing this weekend. She laughed and says that Mark wants me so bad. I tell her that she should go out with Mark sometime. She just laughed and said yeah right. Then she later agreed.
I called Mark back and asked if he would like to go on a date with my friend he hesitated and then agrees.

I wake up the next day around 12:00, Clynelle calls.

“Good morning, what time do you want to meet at the park?”

“3:00 sound good?”

“Sure does.”

“Alright.”

We hang up. I get up and get ready. As I open my front door to leave I look down and I see these candies in a basket. Then there was a card that said:

“I wish you knew.”

I stare across my yard and start to believe that my admirer is Mark. I walk back into my house to put the basket of candies on my table. I walk back out and get inside my car to meet Mark at the park. There he was standing by the lake. I walk over.

“Hey Clynelle.”

“Was sup Leah, you looking fine as hell.”

“Thanks.”

We go over to a spot under the tree. We take a squat and he starts to gaze into my eyes, I smile and turn away.

“Do you know how beautiful you are?”

I smile and change the subject.

“So would you like to come over to my place and have dinner later on tonight then maybe a little desert?”

He smiles.

“Yeah I would like that.”

He gets up and holds his hand out to help me up and walks me to my car. He pushes me up against my car door, I put my arms around his neck and he gives me a kiss.
I drive home thinking about that kiss. I get home and clean up a little for tonight. I go to the mall to try to find something sexy to wear tonight. I pick up this black silky corset top and then this short little mini skirt. Then I found these cute black high heels with a the strap going across the ankle.
When get home I see that I have messages. One from Mark and Clynelle.

Mark:

“I just wanted to see if you were still setting me up with your friend Adina, if so just call me.”

Clynelle:

“Was sup Leah baby, I was just making sure you got home safely and I can’t wait until tonight , I’ll bring the desert, so call me when you’re ready, alright peace.”

I call Adina to set up a date with Mark. I ask her if she would like to go rock climbing with him, she said yes. I call Mark and tell him that Adina wants to rock climbing, he sighs and say ok.

I cook dinner. I make my favorite string bean casserole with fried pork chops and baked macaroni and cheese. I set the plates on the table along with wine in a glass.
I get ready to take my shower. As I put my clothes on I think about what Clynelle and I will do, I don’t put any underwear on. Maybe I’ll let him have me for desert I think to myself. I call Clynelle to let him know that I’m ready.
I hear a knock at my door. I look through my peep hole and it’s Clynelle. I start smiling and open the door. He picks me up and hugs me. I take him by the hand and take him to the table and sit him down and we eat. We finish eating, and then we watch a movie on my sofa.

“Alright desert time,” he says while the movie ends.

He goes over to the refrigerator and gets the strawberries and chocolate that bought. He warms up the chocolate and I put the strawberries in a bowl. We walk over back into my living room and sit on my couch. He dips a strawberry in the chocolate and feeds it to me. I do the same. He grabs another strawberry and purposely drops a drip of chocolate on my thigh. He bends down, looks me into my eyes and licks it off. I smile. Then he lays me down on my couch, takes my shoes off, he runs his hand up my leg and takes my skirt off, then my top. He smiles and notices I don’t have any underwear on. I take the chocolate and I pour some on my stomach, he licks it off slowly. I get up and take the chocolate into my room and he follows me. I take his shirt off; I think to myself “Damn this niggard is built,” he has tattoos of wings and a scripture on his chest muscles. I lay him down on my bed. I climb on top of him and unbuckle his pants. I get the chocolate and pour some from his chest down to his belly button, I lick it off slowly. Then he turns me over on my back and pours chocolate on me from stomach to my coochy. He runs his tongue slowly down my stomach and starts licking, nibbling and kissing my coochy. I moan loudly. As he finishes he climbs on me and placidly strokes his body against me. As he comes he makes this dumb ass noise.

“Yabba dabba doo!”

I open my eyes and look at him like he was crazy as hell.

“Damn what the hell was that,” I say.

“You mean you don’t find that arousing?”

“Hell naw, that shit ain’t arousing, if any thing it ruins the moment.”

“Oh my bad.”

We both get up and put on our clothes. I try to get him out of my house fast because he had just ruined the whole moment and made me kind of stop liking him. As he kisses me good bye the phone rings. It’s Adina.

“Hello?”

“Hey Leah, well Mark and I went rock climbing and it was quite fun.”

“Oh that’s nice so do you think that you two will date?”

“As fine as he is I don’t think so because all he could talk about was you.”
“ Oh for real like what?”

“Do you know what’s Leah favorite color and food , just thing about you.”

“Oh that’s odd. But girl how bout me and Clynelle had some sex and d then when came he yell out some damn yabba dabba doo.”

“Oh hell naw for real?”

“Yeah girl for real. But um I’m going to talk to you later I got to get some rest for work tomorrow.”

“Alright bye.”

We hang up. As I’m getting ready for bed Clynelle calls me. I don’t pick up. I don’t want to have any recaps of what just happened. I fall asleep.
The next day I wake up and get ready for work. I head into my office and I take my seat. I hadn’t seen Mark almost the whole day until break. He walks in.

“How was the park?”

“It was great.”

He looked bothered.

“Well that’s great I’m glad he enjoyed yourself.” He says sarcastically.

I smile and roll my eyes because I know that he’s jealous.

“Thanks, so did you enjoy yourself with Adina?”

“No, not really, she’s a nice girl and all but she’s really not my type.”

“Oh really? So what is your type?”
“Someone who’s funny, fun to be around, someone that I feel comfortable around, that’s thought full and maybe even a little clueless sometimes.”

“Oh, ok well sorry you didn’t have a good time.”

“Hey what did I tell you, don’t be sorry unless I don’t get to see you smile.’

I smile. He turns and walks out of my office. I think to myself about Mark and me. I try to imagine myself with him even though I know that it won’t happen. I focus on my work. As my shift ends and I pack my things up Marks asks me if he could walk me to my car. When we get to my car he looks anxious to kiss me but he turns away and says goodbye.
I get home and see that there’s a message on my answering machine from Clynelle.

“Hey Leah, I ran into your friend today, Adina. She gave me her number so that we could all double date one day you know you, me , her and Mark. Well uh anyway call me later on if you want.”

I call Clynelle but no one picks up, then I call Dina but no one picks up her phone either. But I just have to talk to her about Mark. So I just drive over to talk to her. As I go up the stairs of her apartment I notice that the door is cracked open. I open the door but I don’t see anyone. I walk through the apartment opening every door but I don’t see her yet. I open the bathroom door.

“What the hell Adina, how can you do this to me? And Clynelle how can you do this to me?”

I see Clynelle’s yabba dabba dooin ass sitting on the toilet with Adina sitting on his lap.

“I’m sorry Leah.” Adina says.

Clynelle gets up from the toilet seat and looks at Adina and says:

“Don’t be sorry Dina you know she aint no body.”

I look at Mr. Scooby Doo and I grab the eyebrow raiser and scratch it across his face. Adina sits there on the floor and cries her eyes out to me. I look at them both disgustingly and turn away and leave. As I leave and get into my car I star to cry. I drive fast to get home and call Mark to see if he could help me feel better.

“Hey mark do you mind coming over, I have to talk to you about something.”
I leave a message.

As soon as I hung up the phone five minutes later my doorbell rang. I checked the peep hole it was Mark. I quickly open the door, rap my arms around his waist and burst into tears. He calms me down by rubbing my head and telling me that everything is alright. We walk in my living room and we both take a seat. I tell Mark what had just happened at Adina’s.

“Oh Leah, I am so sorry that happened to you but I’m kind of glad.”

He smiles.

“What the hell you mean you glad?”

“Well because do you know how long I’ve been wanting to tell what I’m about to tell you?’

“No what are you talking about? Tell me what?”

“The first day that you hired me as your assistant I knew that from that day on I was going to fall in love with you. I tried to hide it from you the best way that I could, I was just waiting for the right time.”

“What are you saying Mark.” I try to look confuse.
“I like how you’re clueless right now.”

I smile.

“Well Leah, what I’m trying to say is that I love you and that you’re the one for me.”

My eyes start to tear up.

“You know the time when you got those roses on your desk.”

“Yeah. I remember.”

“Well I sent those roses to you and the basket of candy that sat in front of your door.”

“How were you able to get me roses that same day when you were with me?”
“Remember when we were in the restaurant and I excused myself to the bathroom?’

“Oh yes, I do.”

“That’s when I did it.”

“Mark why didn’t you tell me this before, how did you know that I didn’t feel the same way?”

“I would have told you but you were so clueless and rapped on the waiter that I couldn’t bring myself to tell you and then get hurt And I knew that you hadn’t felt the same way because you wouldn’t have talked to that other guy.’

I hug Mark and start to cry again. I rub his bald head and tell him that I am sorry. Then he looks at me and tells me again not to ever be sorry unless I don’t get to see you smile. I smiled and gave him a kiss. P look him in the eyes and lay him down on my couch. We make love.
“Mark I knew that you liked from the day you took me Cliff’s Bistro but I tried not to believe it.” I say as we lie there on the couch.

“Why wouldn’t you want to believe it? What you don’t like me?”

“Because I didn’t think that you would like me because I thought that you thought that I was stuck up or something. And I more than like you I love you.”

Mark smiles and a tear forms in his eye

“You love me on the real?”

“Yes, I don’t know why I tried to deny it from myself but I just didn’t want to believe because you were my assistant and I was kind of dating someone else.”

“So what makes it different now?”

“Well now that I know that you feel the same way I don’t have to hide anymore and nothing else matters now.”

He smiles.

We both get and get dressed he asks if he could take me to breakfast. I say sure as long as it’s not Cliff’s Bistro. We go to a little breakfast and right when we walk in we see Adina and Clynelle sitting at a booth laughing and talking together.

“Do you want to leave?” Mark says.

“No I’m fine, how about you?”

“We can stay.”

We sit down at a table across from the two of them. I look over and I see Adina looking at Mark and me. I roll my eyes and start talking to Mark. They get up and leave. As they leave Adina walks over and puts a note on my table.
“Sorry Leah I hope you can forgive, I don’t want to lose you as friend.”

I think to myself “Bitch you already did.” I get up from the table and chase out the door.

“Adina I forgive you but I don’t think that I can be friends with you anymore.”

“Ok.” She says sorrowfully.

I go back to the table and give Mark a kiss. He smiles. We both get up from the table and leave.
