Worth the Wait
by Kimberelli
I grew up in a small town where kids don't really "date." People say I'm beautiful, but since I'm not a size 6, I was invisible to guys, and nobody returned my interest. I gave up that anyone could ever want me, and I gave up on ever being kissed. At 18, I started college and moved into my dorm for Orientation Weekend. The night before classes started, I went to an outdoor worship service with a girlfriend from my cheer squad, where we by chance started talking to this guy. He initially showed interest in my friend (due to her appearance), but he asked us both if we wanted to go grab some ice cream. We did, and walked around the historic square for a while, talking and learning about each other. At midnight, she said she was tired and wanted to go to bed--classes started the next morning. Not wanting to leave this interesting guy, I said I wasn't tired, so we just dropped her off at her dorm. Back in the car, he asked me if I'd ever kissed a guy. I said no. He said, "Would you like to?" He drove to a baseball field away from the city lights. We spread a blanket on the ground and sat, looking at the stars...when suddenly we just stopped talking, and he kissed me. I could never dream of a more romantic first kiss; out in a dewy field under a beautiful late-summer sky! In the past I yearned for just a kiss, but now I am so glad I never kissed anyone before Jonathan. That kiss led to many more kisses, and over a year later we are very much in love and plan to spend the rest of our lives together. He thinks it's so wonderful that he's the only man I ever (and will ever) kiss; I just smile and say it was worth the wait.
